Hello everyone, Welcome to NR0718 subgroup 1.

Introduction
Our group has chosen this topic as our research because mostly everyone has the perception that watching television programs for long hours will affect academic results. Therefore, we have come out with this research to prove whether does this perception is fake or fact.
The purpose of the study is to interpret if the number of hours spent watching television has a direct impact on the student’s academic results.

Research question: Does the number of hours spent watching television has an impact on the student's acedemic results?

Research hypothesis(H1): The number of hours spent watching television has an impact on the student's adcademic results. ( THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP)

Null hypothesis(H0): The number of hour spent watching television does not have an impact on the student's adcademic results. (THERE IS NO RELATIONSHIP)

Dependent variable: Student's adcademic results

Independent variable: Number of hours spent watching television

Extraneous variable:
- Age

- Race

- Sex

- Type of programme

- Type of revision

- Environment

Sampling that we have chosen
We have used accidental sampling to choose our 30 samples. We have chosen accidental sampling, as it is readily available and convenient. It is less time consuming and not much of data collection is required. Surveys were given out to students who were in Nanyang Polytechnic library. There was no sampling frame needed.

How we went about doing the survey
We explained the purpose of our study to our participants and ask if they could help us do a survey if they are interested to do it. And we also emphasize the need of the GPA score as it is a important factor in our survey. We noticed that most of our participants were hesitating to write down their GPA. But we assured them that it will be confidential. At the end of our survey, we gave them sweets to show them our appreciation and thank them for their time.

Before taking these pictures, we ask the respondents’ permission and informed them that we will post up their picture in our blog as evidence in our research done.

Our hypothesis
Our group thinks that the number of hours watching television will not have an impact on the student’s academic results. So there is no relationship between the variables. (Null hypothesis)

RESULTS

After data collection, our group have analysed the data by using SPSS. We have come up with a scatter plot for the data values. Pearson’s correlation coefficient of -0.122 indicates a perfect negative relationship between the number of hours watching television and the student’s academic results. So our null hypothesis has been supported through the results from our collected data.

REFLECTION

It had been a very interesting journey for all of us. As this is the first time, we need not have to write 1000 words essay or present instead we just have to post our project on a blog. We were able to work as a team and also share our creative ideas. This statistics project allowed our group to use SPSS, which we were being taught during lectures and tutorials. We had a chance to collect data from the respondents for our chosen topic and form our scattered plot. Firstly, when it came to the survey, we were shy to approach people, but we somehow overcome our shyness and approached them confidently using the right words to communicate and in seeking their help. The survey questions our group came up with played a major role in collecting our data. And most importantly, we have realised the importance of SPSS. Without it, we would not have been able to organise the data.
**LUCKY ALL OF US WERE PAYING ATTENTION DURING LECTURES AND TUTORIALS…HAHAHA….
